1. Align with the Curriculum
Build a brainstorming map that examines the BIG ROCKS within the curriculum. Look for key concepts, structures or overarching themes throughout ONE subject or section at a time. Here is the Alberta Curriculum for reference.
What are the BIG ROCKS within the curriculum?
- What are the main concepts that need to be taught and
- How are the main concepts presented?
- What lessons would need to be taught in order for students to understand this concept?

2. Identify Cross-Curricular Links
Look for opportunities to connect learning across subjects. Consider how one subject-area can be enhanced or reinforce another for richer student understanding.
- Spot Thematic and Project-Based Learning Opportunities
- Find recurring ideas or broad themes that can anchor integrated units or support project-based learning.
- Look for authentic learning
- What experiences would make sense for students to learn from?
- How can you craft situations for students to learn through their experiences rather than being told information?
- Map Out Interdisciplinary Units
- Organize your findings into integrated units that align with curriculum outcomes and promote subject-area collaboration.
3. Map out Experiences and Content across the Year
What field trips or larger activities would support students’ learning throughout the year? How can you mould learning through experiences? Strategically map out WHEN these key events would happen based on the logical timing of the content or the availability of field trips.
Ex. Lessons about plants might be best suited to the spring or later part of the year to allow for students to grow their own.
Strategically map your year plan using these key strategies:

- Place Units Thoughtfully
Position units where they make the most sense instructionally and seasonally. Build in flow—one concept should naturally lead to the next. - Plan Around the Calendar
Use a pacing guide to keep track of school breaks, holidays, and assessment periods. Maximize uninterrupted blocks of time for deeper learning. - Balance Integration and Depth
Maintain depth in each subject while ensuring your cross-curricular connections remain meaningful. Focus on quality integration, not forced overlap. - Get your Year Template for FREE

4. Incorporating Authentic Assessment: Breaking It Down
Adding authentic ways to support learning also lends itself to quality assessment. While you are still focused on the BIG ROCKS or the main lessons required by curriculum, this is your opportunity to incorporate authentic and varied assessment types.
- In what ways does this topic lend itself to being assessed? Is it mainly formative (observations and anecdotal notes) or should students share their understanding through a summative slides presentation?
If you would like to break out your assessments on a separate document for ease, feel free to use our assessment documents. These templates align with the current Alberta assessments as per grade level government assessments AND give you space to plan your yearly assessments in ONE PLACE.
5. Review, Reflect, and Revise
Growth happens through reflection. Make time for it.
- Assess what worked well in each unit and what needs tweaking.
- Adjust integration points, lesson pacing, and unit order based on student needs and evolving opportunities.
- Stay open to new connections as the year progresses. Flexibility keeps your teaching responsive and relevant.
